Montague Berty Earl of Lindsey

was the Lord General of the royalist army during the battle of Edgehill. During this battle he dis-aggreed with
Prince Rupert and the earl of Forth about wich battle formation to use. Lindsey was, quite rightly, in favour of the dutch formation, wich was more suitable for untrained troops.
The King gave in to Rupert and the earl of Forth in favour of the swedish formation and Lindsey layed down his command. He fought and received a mortal wound at the head of his regiment.

Newark Garrison
commanding officer:

Newark was a town of vital importance.
Here the Great North Road crosses the Trent and meets the Fosse Way
wich connected Oxford with vital centres in the north-east.
It was also a constant treat to parliamentS garrison at Nottingham.

1642 - Newark was seized for the royalists by Sir John Digby
and Sir John Henderson who became the first governor of Newark.

27 feburari 1643 : major-general Thomas Ballard begins a siege.
28 februari 1643 : the garrison repulses parliaments forces, the siege ends.

29 februari 1644 : besieged by forces commanded by sir John Meldrum.
sir Richard Byron, governor of Newark at this time.
21 march 1644 : town relieved by prince Rupert.

july 1644 : Rupert is defeated at Marston Moor in wich also units
from Newark take part.

october 1644 : Byron replaced by sir Richard Willis.
26 november 1645 : scottish forces take up siege positions to the north
forces under Pointz and Rossiter besiege the southside.
januari 1646 : aggresive actions by the garrison and Belasyse's almost
lead to the capture of Pointz.
8 may 1646 : Town surrenders on orders from the King.

Captain Stacey's Company

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Not much is known about Captain Stacey. Research has shown that he was stationed for a while in Oxford, ye Kings capital, where he is shown to have ordered supplies for his company. Captain Stacey originated from Wales and for all we know may have returned there after the war.
