28-05-1977 / Paris / Circus Hippodrome (as Strontium 90) / FRANCE • "Gong reunion concert" line-up: Peter Blake, Didier Malherbe, Lady June, Strontium 90, Pierre Moelin's Percussion Band, Daevid Allen/Gilli Smyth, Steve Hillage, Gong. • Attendance: 5,000; sellout. A 10-hour Gong reunion concert was held in the huge circus marquee of the Hippodrome. The original members jammed with each other, played solo sets and finally all members of the original line-up joined together. The concert was put on by Tapioca Records, who planned to release a live album of this event. Mike Howlett, who was the bassplayer for Gong from 03-1973 to 06-1976, formed the band Strontium 90 for this occasion. Phil Sutcliffe wrote the following about Strontium 90 for Melody Maker (11-06-1977): "The WOW is the dynamic double (no hyphen) bass from Mike and Sting (vibrant singer and writer also moonlighting from Police, ex-Last Exit). An idea I've been craving to see tried out and it works like a man powered earthquake". The line-up of Strontium 90 consisted of the following members: Mike Howlett bass, vocals Sting bass, vocals Stewart drums Andy Summers guitar Several songs of the performance were released on the album Police Academy - Strontium 90. |
