15-06-1986 / East Rutherford, NJ / Giants Stadium / USA • Festival line-up: Joan Baez, The Neville Brothers, Jackson Browne, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, Lou Reed, U2, The Police. • Attendance: 50,207 (P); sellout. The final show of the Conspiracy Of Hope tour was simulcast on MTV America and the Westwood One Radio Network. The bill was extended to create a 12-hour media event. ZZ Top, Whitney Houston, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, Third World, Run DMC, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Patti LaBelle and Sarah Vaughn all made appearances in between the usual acts. Again Bono joined The Police during Invisible Sun, after which everyone on today's bill came out for I Shall Be Released. Sting took off his bass, hugged U2's Adam Clayton and then handed over his bass. Dozens of genuine prisoners of conscience came on stage hand in hand, all of them freed by Amnesty, to remind everyone what it was all about. In total the six Conspiracy of Hope concerts draw a total of 116,116 people, grossing $4,041,935 for Amnesty, 75% of which was pure profit. In the weeks to follow, the organisation doubled its membership in the United States, as over 35,000 applied as a direct result of the tour and the telethon. |
