Sting - Concert information

[Updated: August 20, 2002]

02-07-1993 / Efes (Ephesus) / Antik Tiyatro / TURKEY
Setlist same as: 01-05-1993.
Attendance: 20,000; sellout.
Sting's first performance in Turkey was performed at the ancient Greek amphitheatre around the corner from the first library in the world and the whorehouse. The acoustics didn't sound very well. The amphitheatre was overcrowded, leading to the suspicion that the promoter has offered extra tickets for sale above the agreed limit. "Somebody's made a lot of money here", said Sting to a reporter of Q magazine.
English security was flown over. There were no barriers between the audience and the band, just dry moat, packed with photographers, a video crew and both Turkish and British security.
During Englishman In New York a bottle was thrown at David. The Turkish security caught the man and almost kicked him to death, before the British team could carry out the unconscious bottle thrower.
The complete show was filmed. There were plans to broadcasted the complete show worldwide, but eventually only sixty minutes were transmitted by a Turkish TV-station. Only Fields Of Gold appeared on the home video Summoner's Travels.
After Sting's appearance the amphitheatre was closed by local authorities to the public for two years, because of fear of greater damage to the monument.
On 09-09-1993 the PBS TV-channel broadcasted the sixty minutes special "Sting In The Spotlight - Ten Summoner's Travels", including songs from the shows in Ephesus (Fields Of Gold), Passariano and Oslo. Fields Of Gold was also issued on the official video Summoner's Travels, which was released in 1994.
