05-03-1997 / New York City, NY / The Theater at Madison Square Garden / USA • Attendance: 5,600. Sting danced and ran around the stage a lot more tonight than the previous four shows. Before Fields Of Gold Sting stated: "Today is a special anniversary for me, 15 years ago today I started living with the woman I love". He added that anyone that has met her would know why he stays with her, and "This next song is for her". At the end of the song he said: "I hope she's here, I love you Trudie". Before I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying Sting read out loud many of the signs: "Boy, this is difficult!". He chose a guy, then a girl, then at the last minute chose a couple who indicated that it was their anniversary too. The little practice as usual showed that none of them could sing. The audience was screaming and booing, and Sting said, "Aw shit. I think we're gonna need some help up here. I need someone who can actually SING!". Another guy went on stage and ended up basically singing the whole thing by himself. Sting complemented his singing. Towards the end of the show someone gave Sting a small scale model of the Statue of Liberty. He picked it up like an award, and said, "I'd like to thank my producer, God, and my mother!". Instead of his usual goodbye line, Sting said: "Goodnight New York. We won't be coming back for a long long time. God bless, goodnight. I WILL see you again". Bruce Springsteen was in the audience. |
