Sting performed a 40 minute free set in Bryant Park (location :42nd Street and 6th Ave) at 1.00pm to promote the worldwide launch of the new Microsoft operating system: Windows XP. The performance was webcasted by MSN, Tiscali and Vizzavi. Starting on 23-10-2001 the free tickets were available from various retailers in Manhattan (Virgin, FYE, J&R Music, Comp USA, Gateway and Best Buy). Due to the recent attacts in New York City the security was very tight. The first 4,000 people who showed up at the park with a ticket were allowed to attend the show.
Before the show Sting said: "Thursday's concert and worldwide webcast will allow me to complete the project we chose to abandon due to the horrific events of September 11th. I am especially pleased to do this in the city most affected, and in solidarity with all New Yorkers."
Bill Gates introduced Sting as "An Englishman In New York". Sting told the audience that he was "proud to be a New Yorker" and that the audience "Lived in the greatest city in the world in the greatest country in the world and should be incredibly proud".
